For this project, I explored the relationship between music and architecture by creating a brick sculpture based on a musical piece. I chose “Fur Elise” by Beethoven as the source of inspiration and used a Kuka robot to build the sculpture. My process involved four steps: First, I converted the MIDI file of the piece into a series of linear 2D curves representing the pitch and velocity of each note. Second, I mapped these curves onto a circular domain that matched the platform size and arm reach of the robot. Third, I simplified the curves and lofted them to form a 3D surface. Fourth, I calculated the optimal brick arrangement for the surface, ensuring that each layer had at least two support points for stability. The result was a brick sculpture that reflected the musical structure and dynamics of “Fur Elise”.
